This route involves the asymmetric dihydroxylation of allyl 4-methoxybenzoate, acetonide protection of vicinyl dihydroxyl groups followed by cleavage of p-methoxybenzoate ester and subsequent oxidation to give the (R)-glyceraldehyde acetonide
